Frozen treats: People's Pops cookbook has ice pop recipes for every season

"People's Pops" has 55 recipes from the eponymous ice pop shopOn sweltering summer days, it doesn't take much thinking to reach for a fruity ice pop to help cool down.
Nathalie Jordi, David Carrell and Joel Horowitz would like us to think about frozen treats for every season, however. With their new book "People's Pops: 55 Recipes for Ice Pops, Shave Ice, and Boozy Pops from Brooklyn's Coolest Pop Shop" (Ten Speed Press, $16.99) they've got us covered from summer right through fall, winter and spring.
This book is a standout because nearly every recipe is based on seasonal fresh fruits in blends with a delightful twist: fresh raspberry pops made with a basil-infused simple syrup, fresh blueberries pureed with moonshine (they suggest Catdaddy brand), crushed cucumbers with lemon and violet syrup.
This designer mixing of unexpected flavors devotes a single chapter to shave ice recipes. It divvies up the ice and boozy pop recipes by season. We have permission to share two recipes that would be perfect right about now, just as the days are beginning to cool with fall's approach. As promised, there's the cranberry and apple pop recipe, and we begged (no shame here!) for the mouthwatering pear, cream and ginger ice pop recipe. You'll have to buy the book to get the one for the apple and salted carmel ice pop. Imagine: The flavor of a salt-caramel-covered apple frozen on a stick. Yum!
Want to visit? People's Pops is at 808 Union St. in Brooklyn's Park Slope section and has a daily presence in at least three other locations, including Chelsea Market in Manhattan. The pops also are sold at markets on weekend days at Fort Greene, Smorgasburg, and Williamsburg flea markets in Brooklyn as well at selected Whole Foods stores and gourmet shops around Brooklyn and Manhattan. At each location, there is a changing variety of pop options based on what is available locally. Last year, the season ended mid-October, so be sure to call ahead for the day's flavors -- and hours -- before planning a visit. For more information: peoplespops.com.
